CERN is moving away from Red Hat Enterprise Linux after newer versions dropped support for some older CPU architectures. The change could make 47% of CERN’s specialized control computers incompatible with RHEL 9, even though the machines still work.
Instead of replacing thousands of functional computers, CERN is switching to Debian Linux, which continues to support the older hardware. The move will require adapting CERN’s custom control systems, drivers, hardware boards and bootloaders.
The decision highlights a major issue in scientific computing: software updates can make perfectly working hardware obsolete. Rather than replace the computers, CERN chose to change the operating system and extend their useful life.
Vsakemu svoje. Mene mali mehki ne vidi več.
